Enrollment Service units are at the core of each institution and their ability to be able to respond and recover will largely gage how well the institution is able to respond and recover. The workshop will explore with you tools and techniques that you can use at the department level to be prepared to deal with an emergency and to be back in business.

WS2.03 - Creating and Implementing a New Course Scheduling Paradigm, From Start to Finish At Duke, departmental course scheduling practices resulted in an overload of course offerings in the late morning, or “prime time” hours leading to problems in room scheduling and in student course selection. To address this situation, Duke implemented a revised course scheduling policy that includes new course meeting times and patterns, and new constraints that force departments to provide a better spread of course offerings across the day and across the week. Examples of these constraints include a limit of no more than 50% of a department’s course offerings during the prime time hours and a spread of course offerings across the week, with minimum numbers of three day per week classes, etc.
Many institutions have similar constraints but they are often too difficult to monitor and enforced. To address this problem, Duke created the Departmental Schedule Validator (DSV), a web based software tool through which all departments must submit their course schedules and that monitors departmental compliance with the policy’s constraints . This workshop will review the new policy, the creation and implementation of the policy, and an extensive demonstration of Duke’s Departmental Schedule Validator program. |

If you have experience similar situations in your office, this session is for you. Situations like theses can create STRESS. This session will demonstrate ways to remove stress in your office. T2.11 - Evidence-Based Decision Making for Student Success
Planning for enrollment fluctuation, new incoming classes and the impact on faculty need is a challenge that all colleges and universities face. The need to better understand student demand for classes in order to create a well-informed schedule and be prepared with the appropriate resources is more important than ever. Astra Schedule delivers tools used to help solve these problems. Current Course Offering over supply, under supply and wrong time analysis, driven by student need and demand, is compared to your roll-forward schedule. The data from this analysis allows you to manage your course offerings more effectively than is possible with a manual system or another software application. Astra Schedule is less about scheduling software than it is about a new approach to scheduling. The common approach to higher education scheduling is to place all activities in times/rooms and in doing so minimize political fallout (usually accomplished by changing as little as possible from last like-term). The new approach starts with a better understanding of student needs. Learn how colleges and universities have used this analysis to make high impact changes to their roll forward schedules, offering a schedule that better fits their student population. |

W1.01 - Accreditation: External Review and Quality Assurance Accreditation is among the most essential and the most obscure features of American higher education. While often described as a voluntary system of peer review, it is also a critical linchpin in establishing institutional eligibility to receive federal support. The federal gate-keeping functions assigned to accreditation are increasingly overwhelming the voluntary and collaborative nature of the effort, with occasional calls for full federalization of the process. This session will provide a brief factual background on the accreditation system and present an overview of the policy challenges facing the higher education community with regard to quality assurance and accreditation.
