M2.05 - A Majority of One
As many institutions of higher education look for ways to increase their name recognition among high school students, few crack into the buzz network kids use to communicate. This network includes MySpace websites, text messaging, and word of mouth. Wilkes University's new ad campaign - a Majority of One- was able to speak to students in a way that captured their interests and was picked up in their communication channels. The campaign was featured in the New York Times, local papers and in ad industry publications. The Majority of One campaign utilizes mass media to communicate on a micro level- to individual high school students. Wilkes University uses ads on TV, billboard, mall kiosks, MySpace banners, and bowling alleys, skating rinks and movie theaters to make one-on-one appeals to student leaders. This type of one-to-one approach to higher education advertising has not been done before.

M3.04 - Using Pictures to Communicate with Students
The Registrar’s Office is responsible for many critical academic functions. Those functions usually require us to impart some specific information and/or education to our audience. After many semesters and several delivery methods, we’ve finally gotten the hint that a portion of our target audience is NOT understanding (or even reading) our “specific information and/or education.” So, if what we’re doing isn’t working, then it is our job to find another way to deliver that message. We needed something catchy; something to hook our readers, so that they would read on. Thus, creating a visual environment and the pictogram delivery method to reach our audience was born.

M4.03 - Duke’s Departmental Schedule Validator: Making our Scheduling Policy Work
At Duke, as at many institutions, departmental course scheduling practices tended to result in an overload of course offerings in the late morning, or “prime time” hours. This led to problems in room scheduling and in student course selection. To address these issues Duke implemented a revised course scheduling policy in Fall 2004. This policy includes new course meeting times and patterns, and new constraints that force departments to provide a better spread of course offerings across the day and across the week. Many schools have these types of constraints but they are often not enforced because they are too difficult to monitor. To address this problem, Duke created the Departmental Schedule Validator (DSV), a web based software tool through which all departments must submit their course schedules. This will provide details about the DSV, and will include a live demonstration of that program.
