FEATURED SPEAKERS - SACRAO 2010 CONFERENCE
Plenary Speaker
Lloyd Thacker
 |
After nearly twenty-eight years in the college admission and college counseling professions, Lloyd Thacker left his counseling job in February 2004 to edit and publish College Unranked and to establish the Education Conservancy. Established in March, 2004, The Education Conservancy (EC) is a non-profit organization committed to improving college admission processes for students, colleges and high schools. Goals of the organization include:
- To increase the awareness and understanding of commercial influences in college admissions.
- To provide a platform for educational values to assert their proper role in college admissions.
- To promote educationally appropriate admission practices.
- To make college admissions a sensible and productive set of processes for all.
- To foster collaborative behavior among colleges.
- To generate specific admissions-related ideas and recommendations for colleges, students, and counselors.
Often provocative and occasionally controversial, Mr. Thacker's ideas and suggestions are sure to stimulate conversation and debate among all those present. |
How to Succeed During SACS Accreditation
Dr. Bruce T. Murphy is Chief Academic Officer at Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. He is the highest ranking civilian at Air University, equal to the military rank of Major General. Dr. Murphy holds a Doctor of Education degree in human resource development from Vanderbilt University. As Chief Academic Officer, he recently led the University through a very successful SACS re-accreditation process with virtually no recommendations coming from the visitation team. Dr. Murphy will share his plan for a successful reaccreditation process, a plan that SACRAO professionals can take back for implementation at their institutions.

The Great Locomotive Chase:Tennessee Versus Georgia
Many SACRAOans know Joe as Assistant VP for Enrollment Services and Dean of Univeristy Admissions at Kennesaw State University. A long-time SACRAO member and frequent presenter, Joe is a founder of the GACRAO Institute for Strategic Enrollment Management, a professional development and certification program now being modeled in many other state ACRAO organizations. What many of us don't know is Joe's passion for history and the fact that he has written a book which describes the colorful events surrounding an episode in the early part of the Civil War regarding the very first American train hijacking. The train, The General, located in Chattanooga, remained a prominent historical icon over many decades as Tennessee and Georgia disputed its rightful ownership. Joe's entertaining presentation will recount the actual event and the 20th century conclusion that resolved the legal dispute between Georgia and the City of Chattanooga. Join us for some fascinating history involving our host city, Chattanooga. |
